Young Woman’s High School Scholarship
1 (one) Scholarship of $500 will be awarded. Essay of 500-700 words
Topic: The 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1920, guaranteed the right to vote to women and states that “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” If the Constitution guaranteed the notion of “one person/one vote” why was this amendment necessary and why is it important to you? Use comparisons of women’s rights in the 1920’s and the present day.
Essay must be typed, double-spaced, show appropriate development, sentence structure, spelling and grammar. Evidence of cut and pasting from the Internet or plagiarism will be cause for automatic disqualification.
Deadline for submission: April 10, 2010. Scholarship to be presented at the PCDWC Mother’s Day Brunch, 5/16/09
Scholarship criteria:
- Open to all female High School graduating seniors residing in Pike County
- GPA 2.8 or greater on a 4.0 scale
- No political party affiliation necessary to apply
- Must have letter(s) of Acceptance to college or university
- Recipient must indicate which college or university she plans to attend
- Scholarship award will be sent directly to the college or university of recipient’s choice.
- Indicate undergraduate course of study
- Recipient must show good citizenship and discipline.
- List high school activities (student government, sports, publications, school-sponsored community service programs, art, music, etc.)
- List awards or special recognition
- List volunteer service and or community activities
- Two (2) letters of recommendation from school faculty members, community leader, etc.
Essays that do not adhere to scholarship rules will be disqualified.
Submissions become the property of the Pike County Democratic Women’s Caucus.
